Linux (Fedora 10) brokeded

Well, I (re)installed Linux recently and everything worked fine.

Then I though I might try installing the proprietary nvidia drivers. Fedora couldn't cope with this, and decided that instead of giving me a shell it would just try and use them anyway and stop displaying anything,

No problem, I though. I'll just boot into the shell from grub.

However, I can't GET into grub because when it says "Press a key to do stuff" (or whatever) it doesn't respond to any keypresses.

So basically,
I fail at Linux,
Grub, Fedora and nvidia all hate me,
and I have to use windows.

Sob.

that sucks. Could GRUB be broken? I run ubuntu and I'm not familiar with fedora, so I can't offer much help from that point.

I can see a few ways to work through this:

you could try reinstalling grub
I've not had to do this (fortunately), but I'd assume you'd be able to do so.

grab everything and jump ship
backup all your data from windows, use a Linux liveCD to get data out of your Fedora partition, and then nuke the hard drive

talk to the fedora community
I would assume that fedora would have support forums like what ubuntu has. You could describe the problem there and get advice about how to solve the problem.

I could reinstall grub, but frankly i think it'd probably be easier to just reinstall fedora.

It was just a fresh install of fedora, but with about a gig of updates sad

Actually, I think I might try ubuntu now. Fedora has been good over the years but ubuntu has officially supported non-free software and probably supports most graphics chipsets out of the box. Its a bit unfortunate, as I see one of the strengths of gnu/linux and foss as the wide availability of similar software. It makes hacking harder.

To clarify: 3d acceleration out of the box. I like my games and 3d modelling.

Unfortunately, when you have to re-invent the wheel because of proprietary software, foss can lag behind sometimes: Graphics, wireless, you would know the list.

Still, I hope you have better luck with Ubuntu. It fulfills my needs.

Oh, and for my own curiosity, what gui do u use? Gnome or KDE?

In general gnome, as it has tended to be the environment I've used most. However, I used kde for a few years with mandriva, back when mandriva was still mandrake biggrin

I can pretty much use any decent desktop, though, so I've ended up using jwm, xfce, fluxbox, etc.

Although I have to admit, I'm typing this from windows, primarily because linux is broken atm, but also partly because I know my way around windows a lot better (which in itself sheds some light on how I managed to break linux in the first place). Its easy to switch from the windows shell to gnome, but harder to switch from the dos prompt to bash.

true about the dos/bash. Relearning the syntax, etc.

Since I swapped to linux (gnome btw) I've come to hate having to swap back into windows. It's just so slow and cumbersome, and it has an annoying GUI (anyone reading this, Gnome is closer to Mac OSX's GUI - without the dock - than it is to windows. Swapping between windows and Gnome can be.... frustrating...)

I've never taken the time to explore the file system in linux, so I'm not sure about exactly how it all works. I just refer to Google for anything I need.

I hope you get it all working soon. I'm still using 8.04 because it's supported longer than 9.04 is. Perhaps I'll upgrade when Karmic is released, or just wait for the next LTS
