It hit me this week. I got to the dilemnas and said "Crap. I'm going to have to deal with sort of stuff one day."

I managed to sidestep any legal and ethical issues for numbers 2 and 3 by thinking outside the square, but the difference between theory and practice is quite different.

Did this hit anyone else?

I want to delete this message, but theres no delete button so IGNORE THIS POST.

lol, seeing as your too low rank to delete messages... ill delete it for you, so in the future be careful about what you post... or just erase the entire thing and put "i want this message deleted" this goes for anyone else as well..

Mods and Admins can only delete messages...

i think mods can too dunno.. but admins definitely lol.

lol it would be quite lawl if i set everyone admin.

Can you create a new rank with thread deletion privileges? That'd be kind of useful biggrin

On topic once more, as long as you don't GET into the situations that are mentioned in the work, you should be fine. Telling "Mike" that his actions are going to be illegal before he starts covertly monitoring staff would probably help.

The ACS case studies were a bit more scary, though. Not entirely sure how the concerned parties should have reacted.

Actually, Mike's stuff is legally ambiguous, at least for the handbag stealing one. The office could be defined as a Public area (as opposed to toilets or a conference room), making it legal.

The other two I managed to sidestep it by providing a solution that doesn't touch any privacy/ethical issues.

But yeah, I agree. The ACS one's are nasty.

Mike uses the webcams already attached to the computers. Do they count as clearly visible?

Yeah, they are pretty ambiguous. But with mikes dilemmas you know about the measures before they are put in place. You potentially could and should have stopped him breaching the law BEFORE he puts them in place.

I'd assume so. they'd be sitting on top of the screens, wouldn't they?

And I thought it said he set the cameras up at opposite ends of the rooms (It's been a while now, so I'm not sure)

As for the other two, I offered solutions that didn't rely on surveillance (e.g. just installing the porn filter for now for the porn one, and trying to change the atmosphere of the workplace, going after the reason why they weren't working, to avoid having to deal with privacy issue).
